Yes, email marketing STILL works! Here’s why—

Updated: May 31

“Email marketing is dead,” is a line we’ve all heard before. And it has been doing the rounds for quite some time. However, even statistics say, “not a chance.”

The rapid growth of social media has given birth to almost an infinite number of marketing strategies. And this is ultimately the logic behind the common misconception that email marketing is on the brink of extinction.

Email marketing is far from dying. For starters, almost 60% of the global population has access to the internet—and just about each and every one of them has an active email address. Needless to say, the importance and relevance of email marketing are higher than ever.

Need more convincing? Read on.

Email is now a fact of everyday life

Here’s the thing, an email address is required to do almost anything online. Whether you’re signing up for a social media account, online banking, or doing work-related transactions, your email address is one of the first things they ask from you.

Checking our emails first thing in the morning is an automatic routine for many of us. And with the optimization of mobile-friendly emails, checking our inboxes can now be done at any time and anywhere (even in the comfort of our own beds). And because of this easy access, some people check their emails up to 20 times a day.

Now that’s 20 windows of opportunities to market your business.

Numbers don’t lie

As of January 2021, there are already 4.66 BILLION internet users in the world. And what did we say again about internet users? ALL of them have at least 1 active email address.

In fact, we send about 102.6 trillion emails each year, with the numbers estimated to reach 126.7 trillion by 2022. According to statistics, in 2020, there were about 306.4 billion emails sent and received each day. And the numbers will continue to rise by 2025.

Here are additional stats you may want to check out because, in no way, I’m all making this up.

  • 61% of audiences prefer to be contacted through email

  • 99% of email users open their inbox every day

  • 92% of online adults use email

  • GMAIL has 1.5 billion users

  • Emails reach 85% of your contact list

  • 81% of people who use emails, prefer to use their mobile phones to check their inbox

The dramatic changes digital marketing has seen over the past few years are what caused us to think that emails may just already be a thing of the past.

But clearly, these numbers essentially prove that email marketing is here to stay.

People prefer emails, that’s it.

Referring to the statistics above, 61% of consumers actually prefer to be contacted through email about anything marketing-related.

When it comes to brand marketing and advertising, most people on the internet prefer receiving them through emails. One key thing to remember about email marketing is it’s generally permission-based. So, if someone visits your website and there is a pop-up for a newsletter invite, and they sign up, that only means they want to hear from you and check out your content. All that’s left to do now is make good use of that initial ‘yes’ from your subscriber and nourish the relationship through creating effective and stunning email campaigns.

Who would’ve thought that even with the surge of creative social media campaigns everywhere, email marketing still remains the most effective way of reaching your audience?

Okay, you may wonder...

“I do consistent email marketing, but why haven’t I seen results yet?”

The results of using email marketing strategy lie on two things: content and delivery.

If you find that the strategy is still not working for you, it could be because the content of the email doesn’t meet the interests of your recipients. Emails that are inundated with spam and low-value content are most likely to get ignored more often than they are opened. Yikes, we wouldn’t want that to happen, would we?

In fact, research done by Campaign Monitor reported that 39% of email users prefer email content that is rich in information and value rather than promotional. They prefer emails that offer the best deals, promotions, and information available.

You could try message personalization. If you haven’t heard about it yet, message personalization is one of the most important trends in modern email marketing. Essentially, you send them messages that are tailored to their individual preferences and previous interactions with your brand instead of the usual generic messages. This type of trend can drive more valuable interactions from your subscribers.

Another important thing— stop sending your subscribers 300 emails a day. Okay, that might have been a bit of an exaggeration but you get the point. This is where delivery comes in.

One common corporate failure today is the bombardment of emails which is usually done in a desperate attempt to trigger an interaction with subscribers. Now, tirelessly sending out emails to your subscribers may seem productive on your part, but to them, it’s just plain annoying. A lot of people have canceled email subscriptions because they are receiving way too many.

The point here is your subscribers are in control of the relationship, as they should be, and it’s okay. People can easily be put off by the wrong emails. They hold all the chips and decide if they want to delete irrelevant ‘junk’ emails filling in their inbox, or worse, you get blocked. All because you’re either sending them uninteresting content or you’re sending them a gazillion of the same thing.

Summary? Yes, email marketing still reigns supreme.

Email has been around for half a century but the future still looks bright for email marketing. So, it seems that reports of the death of email marketing hold no truth after all.

Even with the big bang explosion of social media, the importance of email marketing seems to have only grown over the past few years. With all we’ve shared above, it goes without saying that this strategy is not going anywhere.
